Contemplating A World Without Trees

So I was in the park one day….a place I like to hang out in. It’s free…I can people watch…oh..and the exercise ain’t so bad either.

It was this past June and I had an epiphany. I found it really outside even with the trees blowing a little cool air. I could only imagine what it would be like to live without the help of the cool shade of the trees in the summer and the warming earth in winter.

Perhaps I’m corny. Tree hugger am I :-) .

But think about it. Do you even have trees in your neighborhood. As I travel around I find it really scary to be in new subdivisions totally devoid of trees. I grew up with trees in my family’s backyard and I can’t imagine others not having the same luxury. And yet, I see it all the time. IN NEW SUBDIVISIONS no less.

I understand now that there is not necessary a concern for keeping trees when we build. I mean afterall most new homeowners are used to having to plant their own grass after a home is developed. something about that always struck me as..well…odd.

Last year, I learned about Waangari Maathai. She won the Nobel Peace Prize for her work in Kenya helping to plant trees everywhere. She says, after all the talk is done, if you have not planted a tree, you have not done anything. Here’s a video of her and her work.

So I leave you with this thought….if we have not done anything after all the talk is over, we ain’t done anything.
